Bacteriostatic Water

Product description

Preserved sterile water is supplied to qualified Canadian institutions as a laboratory diluent for in vitro sample preparation. The contents are sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol as an antimicrobial preservative in a multi-dose container.

In vitro, benzyl alcohol limits bacterial growth after the septum is entered, which is why the solvent is used when a protocol requires repeated withdrawals from one vial. The preservative is not chemically inert toward every peptide: some sequences are incompatible with benzyl alcohol, so compatibility must be confirmed against the lot certificate of analysis and the receiving laboratory's method before the solvent is introduced into an assay. This listing describes a laboratory solvent only.

Identity references include CAS 7732-18-5 (water) and CAS 100-51-6 (benzyl alcohol). Store at controlled room temperature (20–25 °C). Discard according to the institution's multi-dose vial policy after first entry. Do not use where benzyl alcohol incompatibility is documented.

Lots are sourced from a GMP-aligned manufacturing partner and released as USP-grade water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Composition and related analytical results are documented on the lot certificate of analysis (COA). Retain the COA with the inventory record.

This listing is research-use-only laboratory material offered to qualified Canadian institutions for in vitro and laboratory use. It is not for human or veterinary use, is not intended for diagnostic procedures, and has not been evaluated or authorized by Health Canada as a drug, diagnostic, or medical product.

Common questions

Benzyl alcohol is oxidised to benzoic acid and cleared by glycine conjugation to hippuric acid, and both steps are immature in neonates. The resulting benzoate accumulation was linked in 1982 to a syndrome of metabolic acidosis and gasping respirations, and controlled animal work confirmed markedly greater neonatal susceptibility.
It is the name given to the neonatal presentation reported by Gershanik and colleagues in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1982 - severe metabolic acidosis with a characteristic gasping respiratory pattern and neurological deterioration, associated with benzyl alcohol exposure in newborns.
No. The formulation literature documents benzyl alcohol partitioning into hydrophobic protein regions and promoting partially unfolded, aggregation-prone states. Compatibility is molecule-specific and should be confirmed against the individual preparation's stability data rather than assumed.
